Chapter 11

Yolanda Mayne rolled her eyes in disgust as her brothers and cousins were greeted with wolf whistles and catcalls as they jogged onto the basketball court two hours later. “I’m gonna have to start watching these games with earphones on,” she grumbled.

The remark drew a round of laughter from Neveah, Raina, Yasmin and several other spectators seated nearby. As dusk approached, most of the picnickers had flocked to the outdoor sports arena to watch the charity basketball game that had been billed as the highlight of the day’s festivities.

Upon overhearing Yolanda’s comment, one young woman proclaimed, “Girl, don’t blame us for appreciating all that fineness in your family.”

“I know that’s right,” another woman chimed in. “Three brothers and eight cousins—and every last one of them is smokin’ hot. I’ll take ’em all!”

Over the hearty echoes of agreement, Raina cleared her throat loudly. “Excuse me,” she interjected, flashing the brilliant diamond ring on her finger, “but one of them is already taken.”

Everyone laughed.

As a spirited debate ensued over who would claim the remaining male relatives, Raina turned to Neveah and nudged her. “Check out that confab down there.”

Following the direction of her gaze to the home team’s bench, Neveah saw that Warrick and Xavier appeared to be deep in conversation, their heads bent close together.

“They’re probably discussing game strategy,” Neveah guessed.

“Probably.” Raina narrowed her eyes. “I’m trying to read their lips. Okay, I think Xay just told Warrick, ‘I want the ball…as much as possible.’ Yep, you were right. They’re strategizing.”

But Neveah had gulped hard. Uh-oh.

As she continued watching the two brothers, Warrick laughed and playfully rubbed the back of Xavier’s head, the way he’d done when they were younger. Grinning broadly, Xavier leaned back against his chair, then slowly—deliberately—glanced over his shoulder and looked right at Neveah.

Her pulse leaped.

As she stared back at him, he made the universal gesture for eating, taunting her with a reminder of the dinner date she would owe him if she lost the bet.

She smirked, then responded by directing his attention to the row of NBA ballers lounging on the visiting team’s bench.

He merely laughed.

While the NBA players may have been the bigger celebrities, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the members of Team Mayne were the main attraction. With their tall, broad-shouldered, long-legged bodies glistening with perspiration as they ran up and down the court, the eleven brothers and cousins were walking wet dreams—a smorgasbord of eye candy for every female packed into the stands, many of whom probably had zero interest in the actual outcome of the game. Neveah could almost hear the collective feminine sighs that swept across the crowd every time one of the Maynes scored, or flashed a cocky grin at an opponent, or lifted a jersey to wipe at a sweaty brow, briefly revealing sculpted abs.

The players, to their credit, mostly ignored the whistles and catcalls showered upon them, although everyone had to laugh good-naturedly when one spectator yelled out, “Which one of you wants to
